Basic Commands of UNIX


  id

    Syntax  : 

     id - print user and group IDs and names

   Examples : 

      % id

       uid=111(sms)  gid=222(scp)

     To display the current user and group data. In this example , user id is 111, group id is 222

man

    Syntax  : 

     man - display the usage of the command

    Examples: 

      % man ls

     To display the usage of the ls command 

    Note : Command man is just like a dictionary of UNIX command .

who

   Syntax : 

      who - Identifies the users currently logged in

    Examples: 

        % who

   Result :  informix pts/0  Jan  01  09:00

    Reports the information about the current user.

date

     Syntax : 

     date - Displays or sets the date or time.

    Examples : 

       % date

      Result :  Wed Jul  7  15:20:10  BEIST   2015

    Reports the current date and time. In this example, the current date is July 7, Wednesday, 2015, the current time is 15:20:10 . BEIST here is time zone.

   Note : We must have root authority to change the date and time. But don't modify the system date arbitrarity. In IN system, arbitrary modification can date will cause a lot of problems such as charging abnormal.

echo

     Syntax : 

     echo [arg...] - Writes argument(s) to the terminal.

   Examples: 

    % echo Hello everybody !


    Result :   Hello everybody !

    Writes " Hello everybody ! " to the terminal

banner

     Syntax :

     Banner arg [arg...]  - Displays arguments in large letters

   Examples: 

      % banner Good morning ! 

     Result :  Good morning !


     Display  " Good morning "  in large letters
